What is a Water Softening Plant?

A water-softening plant treats hard water with sodium chloride, commonly known as salt. Hard water contains an excess of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, and iron, which can cause issues in households. These minerals crystallize and adhere to domestic surfaces as the water is heated. A water softener, with sodium chloride, helps replace these undesirable minerals.

The water softening process involves passing the water supply through resin beds in the water softener. Rows of resin beads perform ion exchange, attracting and exchanging undesirable 'hard' mineral ions for sodium ions. Sodium chloride is the most common type of softener resin used for this purpose.
